Feeling anxious about the direction of U.S. politics?

You’re not alone. Here’s how to move forward with strength.

If you’re like many Americans right now, you’re feeling a sense of anxiety and urgency as the current administration’s direction worsens. The agendas unethical. The players compromised. And We the People are bearing the cost.

You’re likely wondering, What can I possibly do?

In fact, you might be overwhelmed by the sheer number of issues calling for your attention—from reproductive rights and deportations, to abuses of power and the fate of democracy itself.

Where do I even start?

Gather strength.

The hard reality is that this time is even more challenging than this president’s previous administration in 2017-2020. Your involvement can make a positive difference—if you know how to build up your strength and maintain it.

Anger is like fossil fuel.

You probably know someone who’s been furious so long that they get burned out or cynically drop out. Anger and outrage are fuel, but they burn too hot to be sustainable long-term.

They say that anger shows us where our boundaries are being crossed, so it’s useful and instructive! However, in the last eight years, I’ve learned that anger is a limited resource.

True and enduring strength comes from an entirely different source: love.

If that sounds too squishy, bear with me.

Love is a renewable energy source.

What we love—ideals like kindness, justice, choice, freedom—are so close to the heart that they can compel us to stay engaged even when the going gets rough.

If you love a trans kiddo, for example, your heart provides the strength you need to be their ally and advocate. There is no limit to love. Unlike anger, it is inexhaustible.

Find staying power.

The current president’s supporters seem to be motivated, not by love, but greed and hatred. Although we don’t know what the future holds, taking action fueled by love gives us the advantage and staying power.

We have a choice to make

We can choose to allow the unconscionable actions of privileged few disturb our peace. Maybe they already have.

Or we can redirect our attention to the one thing over which we have influence–our own hearts–and take action to resist their agenda.
