The AoC Checklist features clear, well-researched actions for Americans who value democracy, equality, voting, and decency. We are a big tent for all people who want a kinder, flourishing nation.

This Week’s Actions

A statement on events in Israel and Gaza

Americans of Conscience Checklist’s vision is of a kind and thriving nation. As such, we generally focus on domestic U.S. issues of democracy and equality. As we witness distressing events between Israel and Hamas, we unequivocally support efforts toward lasting and peaceful resolution. If you would like to aid humanitarian efforts there, this resource lists a variety of organizations assisting people in Gaza and Israel. As a reminder, online spaces are currently flooded with shocking, incorrect information, and news coverage can be strongly biased to sway opinion. We advise discernment and curiosity as you consume any media.

In our own nation, we continue our work for justice so that Americans—Jewish, Muslim, and all—may enjoy the freedom to worship and thrive free from hate-fueled violence. Consider reading this week’s message from Jen Hofmann, Unveiling Hope: Confronting Hate with Courageous Action for practical ways to eradicate hate and support justice.

Contact: Your two senators and one House representative (look up).

Script: Hello, I’m contacting you from [ZIP] to ensure survivors of child and elder abuse, domestic violence, and sexual assault have access to life-saving assistance. At a time when domestic violence deaths are skyrocketing, a proposed 40% cut to the Victims of Crime Act (VOCA) will force shelters to cut staff and programs or even close their doors completely. Please ensure that VOCA funding remains intact in the FY24 budget to meet the rising demand for these critical services.

Action 2: Restore student protections under Title IX.

Write or call: Dr. Miguel Cardona, Secretary of Education
400 Maryland Avenue, SW
Washington, DC 20202
(202) 401-3000

Script: Hello, I’m contacting you from [ZIP] because I’m determined that all students are safe on our nation’s campuses. Prior harmful changes to Title IX resulted in decreased reporting of sexual harassment and the subjecting of survivors to traumatic proceedings. I’m calling on the Biden administration to honor the president’s campaign promise and restore Title IX to protect all students.

Contact: Google your local law enforcement agency’s “non-emergency number”.

Script: Hi. I’m from [TOWN], concerned about the welfare of my neighbors of diverse backgrounds. With a surge of hate crimes targeting religious and racial groups, I want to know if [TOWN/COUNTY]’s law enforcement is tracking accurate hate crime data and reporting it to the FBI?
If yes: Thank you for providing vital information that makes our communities safer and protects all our citizens.
If no: I’m sorry to learn that [TOWN] is among those failing to report this information. With hate crimes and targeted violence on the rise, protecting all our community members is vital. Who may I speak with to urge a change in procedure?

Action 4: Support automatic voter registration in your state.

If you live in AL, AZ, AR, FL, HI, ID, IN, IA, KS, KY, LA, MS, MO, MT, NE, NH, NC, OH, OK, SC, SD, TN, TX, UT, WI or WY, contact: Your state legislators (look up).

Script: Hi, I’m a constituent from [ZIP] urging you to pass legislation adopting automatic voter registration for [STATE]’s voters. AVR increases registration rates in states where it’s been adopted, and by keeping voter rolls accurate and transferring information electronically, it also saves states money. Can I count on your support for this common-sense reform?

If you live elsewhere: Donate to the Brennan Center to support their advocacy for AVR nationwide.

Action 5: Uphold our commitment to our Afghan allies.

Source: AILA

Join the 0 Americans of Conscience who have completed this action by checking the tally box!

Contact: Your two senators and one House representative (look up).

Script: Hello, I’m contacting you from [ZIP] in support of the Afghan Adjustment Act. Many of our Afghan allies have been left vulnerable due to the U.S. occupation, and it’s our responsibility to support them now that our military has withdrawn. I’m counting on [NAME] to establish pathways to permanent U.S. status and protect those still in Afghanistan by co-sponsoring [S. 2327 / H.R. 4627] and supporting its inclusion in the National Defense Authorization Act.

Action 6: Oppose legislation that fails to serve U.S. allies and citizens.

Source: AILA

Join the 0 Americans of Conscience who have completed this action by checking the tally box!

Contact: Your two senators (look up).

Script: Hi, I’m from [ZIP], expressing my opposition to S. 2324. This legislation both compromises our responsibility to our allies in Afghanistan and the U.S., while focusing heavily on U.S.-Mexico border policies totally unrelated to the bill’s stated purpose. I’m joining immigration advocates, veterans groups, and former military leaders in calling on [NAME] to reject S. 2324 and instead support meaningful, bipartisan legislation like the Afghan Adjustment Act.

Action 7: Oppose the U.S.’ inhumane treatment of women and pregnant people.

Source: AoCC

Join the 0 Americans of Conscience who have completed this action by checking the tally box!

Contact: Your two senators and one House representative (look up).

Script: Hello, I’m reaching out from [ZIP] because I’m deeply concerned by reports of ICE and CBP shackling women and pregnant people in detention centers. This inhumane practice is causing dangerous pregnancy complications, miscarriage, and other physical and mental trauma. Please join lawmakers of conscience in co-sponsoring [S. 3247 / H.R. 6298] that set safe standards of care for the treatment of pregnant people in DHS custody.

Action 8: Strengthen access to immigration benefits for survivors.

Source: Alliance for Immigrant Survivors

Join the 0 Americans of Conscience who have completed this action by checking the tally box!

Contact: Your House representative (look up).

Script: Hi, I’m contacting you from [ZIP] in support of access to critical benefits for aspiring American survivors of violence and trafficking. The Working for Immigrant Safety and Empowerment Act prioritizes the safety and self-sufficiency of survivors, increases access to citizenship programs and public benefits, and strengthens protections against detention and deportation. I’m calling on [NAME] to co-sponsor the WISE Act (H.R. 5145), to ensure survivors of violence are protected within our system.

Alternate: Sign the Alliance for Immigrant Survivors petition. (Note: you may be signed up for a mailing list.)

Action 9: Provide children with support in court proceedings.

Source: KIND

Join the 0 Americans of Conscience who have completed this action by checking the tally box!

Contact: Your two senators and one House representative (look up

Script: Hello, I’m contacting you from [ZIP] to advocate for a children’s immigration court. Unlike underage U.S. citizens, unaccompanied aspiring American youth are not guaranteed a right to counsel, yet they face a complex court system not designed for children. I urge [NAME] to vote yes on the bipartisan Immigration Court Efficiency and Children’s Court Act (S. 3178 / H.R. 6145) to implement due process for these kids and provide specialized training for presiding judges.

Alternate: Sign the KIND petition. (Note: you may be signed up for a mailing list.)

Action 10: Protect unaccompanied minors from exploitation.

Source: LIRS

Join the 0 Americans of Conscience who have completed this action by checking the tally box!

Contact: Your two senators (look up).

Script: Hi, I’m reaching out from [ZIP] to express my support for legislation that safeguards unaccompanied minors fleeing violence and disaster. In this situation, kids are often exploited, abused, and forced into work. I’m urging [NAME] to support the Protecting Unaccompanied Children Act (S. 3128) when it comes to the Senate floor to protect the safety and well-being of unaccompanied aspiring American children.

Action 11: Support successful community reintegration programs.

Source: The Sentencing Project

Join the 0 Americans of Conscience who have completed this action by checking the tally box!

Contact: Your two senators and one House representative (look up).

Script: Hello, I’m contacting you from [ZIP] to object to the needless reincarceration of thousands of people serving out sentences for low-level crimes in home confinement. This program, implemented under the CARES Act, has been highly effective, resulting in 0.2% recidivism rates, improved public safety, and reduced taxpayer expense. Please support the well-being of our communities by opposing S.J. Res 47.

Alternate: Sign the petition (uncheck the boxes for SMS messages, email updates, and “to be remembered”).

Action 12: Protect Americans from warrantless government surveillance.

Source: Brennan Center

Join the 0 Americans of Conscience who have completed this action by checking the tally box!

Contact: Your two senators and one House representative (look up).

Script: Hi, I’m a constituent from [ZIP] asking you to cosponsor and pass the Government Surveillance Reform Act (S. 3234 / H.R. 6262). This bipartisan bill would ban warrantless access to Americans’ international phone calls, text messages, and emails collected in the course of foreign surveillance, as well as prohibit law enforcement from purchasing Americans’ data from data brokers. Can I count on you to support these long-needed reforms?
