The AoC Checklist features clear, well-researched actions for Americans who value democracy, equality, voting, and decency. We are a big tent for all people who want a kinder, flourishing nation.

Action 1: Election day is November 7th–Vote!

Turnout is often lower in elections where presidents and members of Congress aren’t on the ballot, but your local elections directly impact your community. Remember, an election can be decided by a single vote, so no matter what’s on your ballot in 2023, exercise your right to vote!

Action 2: Strengthen protection for farm workers.

The Department of Labor has proposed new protections for temporary farm workers. Public comments for these regulations are open until November 14th. Since scripted comments are not counted, submit a comment in your own words sharing why you support the proposed regulations using the talking points below.

I’m commenting from [ZIP] in support of the proposed regulations because they will:

  • Strengthen farm workers’ right to advocate for better working conditions, unionize, and accept guests in employer-provided housing.
  • Protect workers from unjust firing, retaliation, and other labor rights violations.
  • Prevent human trafficking by prohibiting employers from confiscating workers’ travel documents.
  • Target unlawful fees, fraud, and other abuse in the recruitment and hiring of workers.

Action 3: Protect communities from gun violence.

Script: Hi, I’m contacting you from [STATE] about the urgent need for common sense gun laws. A majority of Americans favor a reinstatement of the federal ban on assault-style weapons, and the shooting in Maine is the latest tragedy underscoring the call for reform. I urge you to do everything in your power to ensure passage of the Assault Weapons Ban of 2023 (H.R. 698 / S. 25).

Action 4: Prevent long lines at the polls.

Script: Hi, I’m contacting you from [ZIP] about long wait times at polling places, which disrupt voting access and are most commonly experienced by Black and Latino voters. The People Over Long Lines (POLL) Act (H.R. 5291) would amend the bipartisan Help America Vote Act of 2002 by adding provisions to minimize wait times at polling places. Can I count on you to strengthen voting access by cosponsoring this bill?

Action 5: Support pregnant people’s right to abortion.

Bodily autonomy is a fundamental human right. Lack of access to safe abortion has a devastating impact on the health and well-being of pregnant people, and severe restrictions in southern states like GA disproportionately impact the mental and physical health of people of color. Please support organizations that provide medical and logistical support to people seeking abortion care.

Donate: To your local practical support organization—regardless of the status of abortion services in your state.

Action 6: Address homelessness and expand access to housing for all.

Contact: Your one House representative (look up).

Script: Hello, I’m reaching out from [ZIP] because I’m concerned about the dramatic rise in homelessness affecting over half a million Americans, including families with children. I urge you to expand investments in affordable, accessible housing through the FY24 Transportation-HUD Appropriations Bill (H.R. 4820), and to oppose harmful amendments that would prevent those with the greatest need from accessing housing.

Action 7: Accelerate access to employment for people seeking asylum.

Script: Hi, I’m contacting you from [ZIP] to ask you to cosponsor and pass the Asylum Seeker Work Authorization Act (H.R. 1325), which will reduce the required waiting period for people seeking asylum to access employment. This bipartisan bill will allow our new neighbors to support themselves and their families while bolstering the U.S. workforce. Can I count on your support?

Action 8: Guarantee legal representation for everyone in the immigration system.

Script: Hi, I’m contacting you from [ZIP] to ask you to cosponsor and pass the Fairness to Freedom Act (H.R. 2697/S. 1187), which is endorsed by over 170 civil rights and advocacy groups. This bill would ensure the right to legal representation for everyone in the immigration system who can’t afford an attorney. Can I count on you to support the universal right to representation?

Action 9: Protect survivors of domestic violence and trafficking.

Contact: Your one House representative (look up).

Script: Hi, I’m contacting you from [ZIP] to ask you to cosponsor the Working for Immigrant Safety and Empowerment Act (H.R. 5145). This bill will help ensure that survivors of violence and trafficking who are at risk for deportation will no longer have to choose between living with abuse and potentially being reported to ICE. Please cosponsor this crucial bill.

Action 10: Provide workers paid time off to vote.

Contact: Your one House representative (look up).

Script: Hi, I’m contacting you from [ZIP] to ask you to cosponsor and pass the Time Off to Vote Act (H.R. 5322). This bill will require employers to provide at least two hours of paid leave to cast a ballot, establishing a federal standard instead of the current state-by-state patchwork of rules. Can I count on you to guarantee paid time off for working voters?
