This Week’s Actions
Action 1: Time sensitive: Stop a planned ICE Warehouse purchase.
Time to complete: 10 minutes
Thank you to the 152 Americans of Conscience who completed this action!
If you’re a resident of DC, DE, MD, PA, VA, or WV: Use the form via the Action Network to submit your unique comments by July 1.
Script: [Edit using points from Detention Watch Network and Hagerstown Rapid Response.] Hello, I’m ______ from [ZIP], expressing my opposition to a proposed ICE Warehouse in Washington County. According to DHS’s own environmental review, the facility would generate approximately 187,000 gallons of wastewater every day although the sewer infrastructure is already at capacity. If sewage spills occur, they could contaminate communities throughout the Potomac watershed.
If you’re a resident of the 44 other states: email CongresstoDHS@hq.dhs.gov or call the DHS Comment Line at 202-282-8495.
Script: I support ICE’s decision to sell or give away warehouses originally intended to detain people and listen to community leaders. I am writing to urge you to abandon additional warehouses in Surprise, AZ, Socorro, TX, San Antonio, TX, and Hagerstown, MD. There are many ways to address immigration; putting people in literal warehouses should not be one of them. Thank you. [Your name and address]

Action 2: Time-sensitive: Oppose unconstitutional involvement in voting by the U.S. Postal Service before July 2.
Time to complete: 15 minutes
Thank you to the 220 Americans of Conscience who completed this action!
The 30-day window to submit a comment closes July 2. The U.S. Postal Service has proposed a new rule that attempts to give the USPS unconstitutional oversight of elections in line with a recent unlawful presidential executive order already being challenged by voting rights advocates in at least four lawsuits. It would require each state to create a list of voters eligible to vote in federal elections and assign a unique ballot barcode to each voter. The USPS would then refuse to deliver ballots to anyone not on the list.
Send an email with a unique comment opposing this proposed new rule: PCFederalRegister@usps.gov, using the subject line “Ballot Mail.” Email comments must contain your name and physical address (you cannot comment anonymously).
Alternate: Send a letter with a unique comment opposing this proposed new rule:

Action 3: Prevent politicization of scientific and medical research.
Time to complete: 20 minutes
Thank you to the 124 Americans of Conscience who completed this action!
A proposed rule by the Office of Management and Budget would politicize billions of dollars in federal grants by:
- Putting political appointees, not medical or scientific experts, in charge of what research gets funded, without input from any peer review.
- Allowing the government to cancel funding, without warning and for any reason, in the middle of ongoing work.
- Muzzling researchers by requiring pre-approval from the government before they can share their findings.
Submit a unique public comment: on the Federal Register by July 13, 2026, citing docket number OMB-2026-0034. Modify the above points or use your own. It’s important to tell your story regarding this issue. Simply choose one provision (e.g., ban on LGBTQ+ research, ban on international collaboration, or any grant at risk of being cancelled early) and explain how it would impact you as a member of the public, an individual with a specific disease, a researcher, etc.
Bonus: If you are affiliated with any organizations, associations, universities, colleges, professional bodies, institutions, etc. urge them to submit a comment, as comments from this type of group will be important if this rule is challenged in federal court.
Action 4: Time sensitive: Oppose the confirmation of an anti-science nominee.
Time to complete: 5 minutes
Thank you to the 108 Americans of Conscience who completed this action!
Contact: Your two senators (call, write, or email).
Script: Hello, I’m ______ from [ZIP], urging you to oppose the confirmation of Harold Duncan as deputy director of the Office of Management and Budget. Duncan does not respect congressional power of the purse and wants to give the executive branch the power to cancel crucial scientific and medical research funding. Please vote “NO” on Duncan’s confirmation. Thank you.

Action 5: Ensure you can vote in all 2026 elections.
Thank you to the 88 Americans of Conscience who completed this action!
Voter suppression looms large, but you have some control. Take a moment today to ensure that you can vote in your state’s primary election and the general election on November 3.
- Confirm that your voter registration is still valid (or register to vote for the first time by your state’s deadline; if you’re turning 18 before November 3, you may be able to pre-register).
- Update your address or re-register if you’ve recently moved.
- Make a plan to vote by mail or in person, whether early or on Election Day.
- If you plan to vote by mail, check your state’s ballot return deadline.
- If you plan to vote in person, check your state’s requirements for voter ID (these may have changed).
- Find out who and what is on your ballot.
- Text this link to three friends to ask them to register to vote: https://www.voterparticipation.org/my-voter-info. Studies show that people are more likely to vote if they are encouraged by someone they know.
- Bonus: Share this action with friends to ensure they can vote too!

Action 6: Reject the FBI’s voter intimidation tactics.
Time to complete: 10 minutes
Thank you to the 51 Americans of Conscience who completed this action!
Contact: Your state’s governor (look up), your town or city’s mayor (look up), and your county administrator (look up).
Script: Hello, I’m ______ from [ZIP], asking you to make a public statement supporting voting rights and opposing the FBI’s recent attempt to intimidate voter registration advocates, a clear abuse of federal law enforcement power. States, not the federal government, conduct elections, and I ask you to clearly state that [STATE/CITY/COUNTY]’s voters should be free from intimidation. Thank you.

Action 7: Empower young people to vote.
Time to complete: 10 minutes
Thank you to the 17 Americans of Conscience who completed this action!
Of the Americans turning 18 in a typical midterm election year, fewer than 30% are registered to vote. When young people don’t register, their voices are less likely to be heard in decisions that affect their present realities and their future options (especially in states where registration is not automatic). The Civics Center empowers high school students to register, helps them believe in the power of their vote, and makes voter registration a normal part of preparing for adulthood. You can support young people in strengthening our democracy and ensure they have a voice in shaping it.
Have a conversation: Talk to a teen, teacher, or parent you know about bringing The Civics Center’s voter registration strategy to their local high school.
Bonus: Donate to The Civics Center.
