This Week’s Actions

Action 1: Oppose congressional redistricting that enshrines racial discrimination.

Thank you to the 58 Americans of Conscience who completed this action!

Contact: Your state governor and two state legislators.

Script: Hello, I’m ______ from [ZIP], asking you to protect the integrity of all of [STATE]’s voters by rejecting redistricting maps that are racially discriminatory. Three states (AL, TN, and LA) have already introduced redistricting legislation that could weaken or eliminate historically black congressional districts ahead of the midterm elections. The Supreme Court’s decision in Louisiana v. Callais has altered a decades-old understanding of the Voting Rights Act, which may result in similar efforts in other states. What are you doing to ensure equality in representation?

Bonus: Donate to the Voting Rights Lab and Black Voters Matter to support nonpartisan legislation tracking and voting-rights advocacy.

Action 2: Demand Congress restore the Office of the Immigration Detention Ombudsman (OIDO).

Thank you to the 120 Americans of Conscience who completed this action!

Contact: Your two senators and one House representative (call, write, or email).

Script: Hello, I’m ______ from [ZIP], and I oppose the administration’s closure of the office tasked with investigating detention abuse. With poor healthcare conditions and the deaths of eighteen people in ICE detention so far this year, oversight from OIDO is more vital than ever. DHS attributes the closure to a lack of funding in the Homeland Security appropriations bill; however, that bill does not require OIDO’s closure. Please demand the immediate restoration of OIDO to ensure accountability for unethical actions.

Action 3: Help educate Americans about their state’s voter ID requirements.

Thank you to the 7 Americans of Conscience who completed this action!

An estimated 2.6 million Americans could not vote in many states today because they don’t have a government-issued photo ID. Many states’ voter ID laws are confusing. VoteRiders offers free, state-specific info listing all accepted forms of voter ID and alternate options to nonprofit organizations and government offices.

Take action: If you’re connected with a nonprofit or government agency: Order free VoteRiders’ Voter ID information cards here.

Alternate: If you know of a local nonprofit: Look up their contact info here and ask them to order free VoteRiders’ Voter ID information cards at the link above to distribute during canvassing, registration drives, and tabling events.

Action 4: Empower teens to vote.

Thank you to the 7 Americans of Conscience who completed this action!

Contact: Any teens in your circle.

Script: Hi! Did you know that the voter registration rate for 18-year-olds is less than 30% nationwide, compared to 75% of Americans aged 45 and up? Young voters turn out to vote at high rates once they are registered, so registering now helps create a robust democracy. Many states even allow voter preregistration for 16- and 17-year-olds, meaning that nearly every high school student can register by the time they graduate. Will you commit to preregistering now and to voting in the next election? You can also host a voter registration drive at your school before the spring semester ends.

Action 5: Urge the end of lifetime Supreme Court tenure.

Thank you to the 103 Americans of Conscience who completed this action!

Contact: Your two senators and one House representative (call, write, or email).

Script: Hello, I’m ______ from [ZIP], asking you to co-sponsor and pass H.R. 3544, theSupreme Court TERM Act of 2025. Introducing term limits for Supreme Court justices is supported by three-quarters of American voters, including majorities across party lines. Regularly scheduled judicial appointments would limit the influence of presidential administrations on the political makeup of the nation’s highest court, which should be above partisanship.

Support democratic engagement and advance equality

The Checklist has been running since 2016, thanks to the support of our donors and patrons. Recently, the journals we subscribe to have been increasing their rates, making it harder to get the information we need. Could you support us at $10 per month to help defray these costs? Here’s where you can learn how. If you’re already a supporter, thank you so much!
